Extension of Meanings: Text and Image in Contemporary Chinese Photographic Works

This essay focuses on an aspect of photographic practices that are often seen but seldom discussed in contemporary Chinese photography: the creative practices that focus on the relationship (e.g. complementarity and contrast) between text and image. Concerning the traditions of Chinese literati painting, contemporary semiotic theories from the West, and the development of narratologies, this essay examines the works of several contemporary photographic artists in China that combine text and image. More specifically, it focuses on the theoretical framework behind the diverse practices of the twenty-first century. It addresses three main topics: the traditions of Chinese literati painting (which includes poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal carving), Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory and its application in the visual world, and the theories and paradigms of storytelling in the evolution of narratology into its newer form. In addition, the essay explores how text and image theories and paradigms of different origins exist in contemporary art practices and how they have extended the meanings of these works through the complementarity and conflict between text and image.

摘要:本文关注中国当代视觉艺术中时常出现,但缺乏讨论的领域,即主要围绕“摄影”(photographic)创作所展开的文字与图像之间,即互相影响,互为补充,或者意义向反的作品。《意义的延伸》试图在中国传统美术、西方当代艺术与图像理论,以及叙事学的发展等广泛的语境下,考察中国当代视觉艺术中的图文实践。本文将从艺术家实践的案例出发,重点考察2010年之后丰富多元的图文实践所依托的理论和范式的来源,涵盖以下三个部分:中国文人画中图文修辞的传统;以罗兰巴特为代表的西方符号学传统;以及在叙事学演变过程中所建构的新叙事理论和范式。在此基础上,本文反思的一个重点问题在于,这些来源不同图文理论和范式是如何在艺术家当下的创作脉络中延续,并利用图像与文字的互补与冲突来延伸其作品的意义。
