China has a fascinating history of photobook publishing. As Martin Parr has said, “China is the forgotten land of photobooks that no one knew about”. Stepping into the 21st century, photography, as one of the fastest developing mediums in art, has shown vast potential in China. Independent photobooks have, in terms of their concept, aesthetics and dissemination, grabbed our attention.  They showed us the capacity of photography to engage with print-making, graphic design and other forms of art around us.

Contemporary Chinese photobooks, despite their emerging prowess, have generally not yet been discussed – especially not from an academic perspective. Despite this, Chinese photographers persist in exploring the interactions among photobooks and their contents, visual expression, and Chinese aesthetics. For the first time, "The Adventures of Photography and Paper: Contemporary Chinese Photobooks", after being shown at the FORMAT International Photography Festival 15, is presented in China to display a range of the latest photobooks created by Chinese photographers in the last five years.

The exhibition starts with “photobooks as a form”, and tries to discuss the relations between the creation of contemporary photobooks with narrative, visual expression and their dissemination. It invites audiences to appreciate photobooks, a form of creation which is urgently explored in contemporary Chinese photography. Besides the 50 photobooks that were exhibited in the UK, Gucang Contemporary Photo Gallery specially added over 20 photobooks for exhibition, including handmade books from artists, and photobooks that have been self-published or published by independent publishing houses.
