05: Will our hometown be forgotten by the rapidly developing society?

Photobook Exhibition

Curator: He Yining

Duration: 2021.4.30-5.30

Location: Nantou City, Shenzhen

As shown in humanist geographer Yi-Fu Tuan’s “topophilia” and anthropologists Olivia Angé and David Berliner’s work on anthropology and nostalgia, the hometown has morphed into a playing field for human emotions, imaginations, and memories over the last fifty years, and its existence and environment have become a medium and symbol for feelings and events. As one of the lenses through which the individual views themselves and the world, the hometown and its significance are also constantly being expanded in architecture, design, art, and literary practices.

“Will our hometown be forgotten by the rapidly developing society?” features 40 publications and photobooks by artists around the world on topics such as the hometown, urbanization, and social acceleration. Among the works showcased in the exhibition are images of the cultural and urban landscape of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area from the mid-20th century to date, visual representations of worldwide urbanization since the turn of the century, and in-depth explorations of such practices. In addition, the exhibition attempts to construct visual models of the hometown with artworks created from the perspectives of different fields, environments, interactions, rituals, emotions, and mediums, inviting the audience to experience the sparks of imagination and to search for individual memories in the nostalgic narrative between the images and pages.
