Session Theme: Materiality Turn and Photographic Practice
In the contemporary context of large-scale production and widespread dissemination of technical images, an increasing number of artists are returning to traditional photographic processes, exploring material experiments and apparatus-based displays, and delving into the generative entanglements between technical images and their material supports. This practice aligns with the recent discussions and curatorial practices in the humanities and arts around “new materiality,” where “new materiality” specifically refers to a renewed focus on material processes, media carriers, textures, and sensory presentations, rather than a complete philosophical theoretical system.
As noted by Sandra Plummer, Harriet Riches, and Duncan Wooldridge, the ongoing attention to photography’s materiality is returning in contemporary practice. They describe this as a “materiality turn”—critically reactivating the heritage of analog processes while transcending their established historical boundaries, opening up multiple media imaginations oriented toward the future. This turn is not only a tribute to traditional craftsmanship but also an exploration of future possibilities for images.
The Guangzhou Image Triennial 2025 takes “expanded photography” as its core concept, recasting the bonds between humanity and reality in an era of surging algorithmic visuals. Contemporary artists, through the interplay of digital aesthetics and post-digital aesthetics, construct alternative forms of attention mechanisms, weaving new imagined communities of nature and memory.
Against this backdrop, the roundtable will explore the interplay between images and materiality in the algorithmic era. Drawing on the exhibition’s theme and their personal practices, the guests will examine the potential for innovative integrations of traditional techniques with contemporary technologies, and contemplate how art can rejuvenate modern cognition amid perceptual crises.
