We have always photographed the intimate moments of life: a shared meal, bursts of laughter among friends, vacations. These simple, everyday moments weave a shared memory that extends far beyond borders. The United States and China have endured decades of tension, but behind the political rhetoric, there have always been families reuniting, birthdays celebrated, farewells, and reunions. While American households have been capturing their daily lives in color since the 1950s thanks to Kodachrome, color photography did not become accessible in China until the 1980s.
Under The Same Sky skillfully blends these two visual archives: by pairing two photographs of the same event, it creates images that speak to us—often humorous—highlighting both contrasts and similarities. Looking at these photographs reminds us that, despite history, we have always been united by what truly matters: love, the passing down of traditions, and those everyday moments that define us.
