This book is the second series of ‘New Art Museum Studies’ edited by Prof Wang Huangsheng, which is divided into ‘Special Plans’, ‘Concept/Discussion’, ‘Space/Production’, ‘Institution/Institution’, ‘Institutions/Systems’, and ‘New Art Museum Studies’. It is divided into five sections, namely ‘Special Planning’, ‘Concept/Criticism’, ‘Space/Production’, ‘Institution/System’, and ‘Presence/Practice’, and contains a total of 18 articles. The book focuses on exploring new concepts in art museum studies, involving interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary perspectives such as art museum studies research methodology, exhibition mechanism, cultural policy and jurisprudence, as well as observing, tracking and analysing innovative and experimental art practices. On the basis of contemporary multiculturalism, it reflects on a series of phenomena faced by art museums in the process of development, and looks forward to establishing an effective dialogue with international and domestic museums and art museum studies.

Curatorship as an Exploratory Research Method: A Response to the Case of “Abode of Anamnesis”

“Abode of Anamnesis” was the winning proposal of the “Research-Based Curatorial Project,” initiated by the OCAT Institute in 2018. The exhibition was based on my research proposal titled “Picturing Histories: Historical Narratives in Chinese Contemporary Photography,” developed in early 2018. After a year of preparation, the exhibition was finally held at the OCAT Institute from March 8 to June 18, 2019.

This research-based curatorial project as a whole included the “Abode of Anamnesis” exhibition, a series of activities organized alongside the exhibition, and a publication of the same name. As part of the research-based exhibition curatorial project, “Abode of Anamnesis” focused on the practice of contemporary photographic narratives, examining the development and characteristics of the photographic medium within the context of postmodern visual narrative, as well as its similarities and differences with other media in terms of narrative function. Additionally, it addressed the complex relationship between history, memory, archives, and photographic narratives.

This paper attempts to reflect critically on the research-based exhibition by revisiting and summarizing the intertwined relationship between research, writing, and publication woven by “Abode of Anamnesis,” while simultaneously proposing my understanding and critical reflections on the research-based exhibition.

策展作为一种探索性的研究方法:以“记忆寓所”为个案的回应 摘要

“记忆寓所”是OCAT研究中心于2018年首次发起的“研究型展览策展计划”优胜方案展;该展览基于2018年初,我以“描绘历史:中国当代摄影中的历史叙事”为题的研究方案,历经一年筹备,最终于2019年3月8日至6月18日期间在OCAT研究中心展出。

该研究型策展项目的整体包含了“记忆寓所”展览、配合展览所举办的一系列活动以及展览同名出版物。“记忆寓所”作为研究型展览策展项目的一部分,围绕着当代摄影叙事的实践展开,关注摄影媒介在后现代视觉叙事语境内的发展和特征,以及其与其他媒介在叙事功能上的异同;同时指向历史、记忆、档案与摄影叙事之间的复杂关系。

本文试图以一种围绕回顾、总结的写作实践,在重思“记忆寓所”所编织的研究、写作和出版之间关系的同时,提出我对研究型展览的理解和批判性反思。
