From June 27 to October 8, 2025, Fotografiska Shanghai is proud to present Photographic Geomancy, a major group exhibition of contemporary Chinese art. Curated by He Yining in collaboration with Guangdong Times Museum, this touring project explores the convergence of photographic practice, geographical knowledge, and ecological discourse. The presentation highlights Fotografiska’s commitment to expanding the boundaries of the visual image and fostering critical dialogue on contemporary Chinese photography. Featuring 20 artists working at the intersection of art, geology, and geopolitics, the exhibition presents meticulously reconstructed visual narratives rooted in local knowledge.
Invoking the traditional concept of “geomancy” (fengshui) as a metaphor, the exhibition reveals how artists utilize fieldwork and geographical exploration to address complex issues regarding China’s historical landscapes, aesthetics, and geopolitical realities.
The show is structured into four thematic sections: “Retracing Ancient Terrain,” “Geological Perception,” “Infrastructure Archaeology,” and “Poems of Phantom Lands.” By following these artistic journeys, the audience is invited to traverse the mountains, rivers, and historical strata of China. Ultimately, the exhibition reinterprets the vast Chinese landscape through a synthesis of visual art, geography, and history.
Accompanying the exhibition is a comprehensive public program, featuring curator-led tours, film screenings, academic roundtables, workshops, and lecture-performances.
